@foone Other annoying problems: I've yet to encounter a spellcheck that lets me type "realise" without it marking it as wrong, or "correcting" it for me. I guess Merriam-Webster is more to blame for that one.
@hikari@luna I'm curious what you think of bottles (I don't think it'd have helped in this case, and it's far less integrated than what you plan, but it seems nice for managing multiple versions of wine, at least)
@ObsidianUrbex@gme I very recently just setup Iceshrimp.net, but the main reason I chose it is unlikely to be important to your use. I wanted to be able to react to posts with custom emojis :3
gotosocial seems like a solid choice, but you need to bring your own front end that is compatible with the mastodon api. I set it up before I realised this was not suitable for me because it lacks custom reactions. If you only use the app that shouldn't be a problem, and rrees.me/2024/03/24/alternative-mastodon-frontends/ has a few web front ends.
As for federation I think that servers discover you when you follow someone on that server, or someone on that server follows you. I don't think a relay would help people find you but it could help you find others. But I don't really know for certain.
@mildsunrise@xerz@raito I don't even care for the term sideload. It's my device. I'm installing something on it.
I feel like windows at least has already normalized getting signed my a microsoft cert or whatever, it shows you a big scary warning if you run something that isn't. But bypassing it is two clicks; more info and run anyway. Or something like that.
@lethalbit Yeah, seeing ads in general make me question anything. Like I've seen physical ads for mullvad and I don't like that. Definitely still a step above to youtube sponsors though
