Is it a hot take that Samus Returns is pretty fun? It seems to get a lot of hate, but I'm enjoying my time with it so far.

Edit for clarity: the 3DS version

@thatgalsilver the 1991 one or the 2017 one?

we were huge fans of the 1991 one, really loved it as kids

the 2017 one just kind of has an impossible task because the series has been too many things to too many people over the years, and the 1991 game would be unacceptable to audiences today because it's more of a nature walk than it is a horror movie or a power fantasy...

I really should play the 1991 version and the 2017 version sometime. I only played AM2R, but I thoroughly enjoyed that.

@ireneista @walnut I was playing AM2R for a while and it's quite good, especially if you like Super Metroid or Metroid Zero Mission/Fusion. I personally felt the difficulty was a bit high, but I also am way more casual with the Metroid games than most fans of the series. I mean, I've never beaten Metroid 2 in any form, nor have I played Super Metroid. I started with Zero Mission and after over a 2 year break I'm finally moving on to the 3DS remake of 2.

Super Metroid is probably my favorite Metroid of all time. Zero Mission is up there too. So your description might be accurate. I definitely appreciated that AM2R has a Super Metroid control scheme, if that tells you anything.

Yeah, I do think the difficulty is a bit higher in AM2R. Super Metroid and Zero Mission you'll have enough health and missiles to tank pretty much any boss while missle spamming. I think it's comparable to Fusion's difficulty, with a few spots that are a bit harder. There is an difficulty selector in AM2R; I don't know how much of a difference that does or doesn't make.

Fusion and AM2R while I enjoyed I have less of a desire to go back and replay than Super Metroid, in large part because of the linearity for both. It could also be that I am biased because it was my first Metroid game :) . There are also plenty of Super Metroid ROM hacks, though I only really played one.

In AM2R's case hunting the metroids also gets a bit old by the end. Doing the same mini boss fight is only fun so many times, though it is cool how even the same metroid type gets better ai as it goes.

If you can get past the difficulty Irenes (no shame on playing on easy!) then I suspect you will like AM2R's interpretation of the environments in Metroid II. Combined with the soundtrack which was clearly made with lots of love for Metroid's soundtracks in general, it was fun to explore.

@walnut @thatgalsilver thanks! yeah not gonna lie, all modern games are too easy for us because we grew up in the day when the expected way to play a game was to exhaustively search every tile of the entire world and memorize where everything was, which is not, like, good game design or anything, but if you grow up expecting it it's hard to enjoy anything else........

we're definitely gonna try AM2R soon :) we really appreciate your detailed description of what to expect
