Super Metroid is probably my favorite Metroid of all time. Zero Mission is up there too. So your description might be accurate. I definitely appreciated that AM2R has a Super Metroid control scheme, if that tells you anything.
Yeah, I do think the difficulty is a bit higher in AM2R. Super Metroid and Zero Mission you'll have enough health and missiles to tank pretty much any boss while missle spamming. I think it's comparable to Fusion's difficulty, with a few spots that are a bit harder. There is an difficulty selector in AM2R; I don't know how much of a difference that does or doesn't make.
Fusion and AM2R while I enjoyed I have less of a desire to go back and replay than Super Metroid, in large part because of the linearity for both. It could also be that I am biased because it was my first Metroid game :) . There are also plenty of Super Metroid ROM hacks, though I only really played one.
In AM2R's case hunting the metroids also gets a bit old by the end. Doing the same mini boss fight is only fun so many times, though it is cool how even the same metroid type gets better ai as it goes.
If you can get past the difficulty Irenes (no shame on playing on easy!) then I suspect you will like AM2R's interpretation of the environments in Metroid II. Combined with the soundtrack which was clearly made with lots of love for Metroid's soundtracks in general, it was fun to explore.
