A couple of interesting threads to understand how research is weaponized to BOTH discredit social scientists who work on human outcomes AND advance a political agenda. A Trump admin economist who has deeply shaped Trump immigration policies accusing social scientists of bias in analysis choices while making those biased choices himself.

When people yell at me for caring about the nuances of methodology and retaining my expertise in analytic and research design choices it is this sort of thing I think about.

In a world where a spurious regression effect in 2006 can be a lever for justifying narratives that create widespread violence and loss and grief in our communities twenty years later, you need people like me and this economist and everyone like us. I hope enough of us survive this era and get to keep doing social science.

God this makes me so angry. When I think about the number of careful, rigorous and compassionate researchers who should be shaping the evidence about our world instead but have left research, and the moments I myself have had the chance to work on policy related work and then ultimately how unsustainable it was financially for me and my family, it's all just beyond exhausting.

@grimalkina reading the praise others have heaped onto this guy, too. Just... so gross. The paper showcasing that he just so happened to pick a regression method that erroneously proved his point and how it seems that hasn't impacted his standing... UGH.
