They're dead to me, monetarily and openly supporting a white supremacist is a bridge too far. Note that it wasn't just they were unaware and denounced him afterwards, they explicitly were fine with this even after finding out.

It's a shame, I bought one of their laptops before all this. Guess I won't be swapping motherboards when the time comes.

They're not the only ones making more repairable hardware though. MNT Reform is significantly more open still. Tough to justify over a used laptop with more performance, but still cool.

politics, bad news @walnut yeah I mean it just seems like guilt by association which feels like a bad reason not to support a company that is finally developing good repairable hardware.

The issue in this super connected world is you can find someone unsavory connected to literally anyone.

The thing is I expect a better response from them than "oh well, we're going to keep sending him laptops anyway.". Had it simply been "we didn't know, we didn't think to vet for that, but we won't continue any longer" it would have been fine. Their response was disappointing, and they continue to support a known white supremacist who's hostile to the tech community long after plausible deniability of ignorance.

Absent from that response, and any of their responses? A recognition of any wrong doing, intentional or not. A total and complete refusal even. I shouldn't have to say this, but your "big tent" cannot include white supremacists. They've since sent him new hardware, even after that. Pretending otherwise at that point is not even willful ignorance, it's complacency.

Getting a bit meta now, with every community, you need to figure out who it's for and who it's not for, and then stick to it. It can't be for everybody, and if you include bigots, you'll find that their targets will leave, leaving you in a room full of bigots.

politics, bad news @walnut I just don't get the sense that this person that you're talking about is either as closely associated as you're saying or as bad as you're saying. I think if it were so cut and dry they obviously wouldn't associate.

They keep sending him laptops, so I'm not sure what else you want here? They choose to associate with him, and he shouts out their hardware. They also think that it's okay to work with white supremacists in the name of a "big tent". This is rather simple math.

This whole thing would have been really easy to avoid. All it would have taken is a "we weren't aware, we'll look into it." followed by an "we want to end any formal or informal relationship with DHH on account of him sucking."

But they haven't done that. That, to me, says a lot about the people behind framework.

Look, I get not fully vetting everybody you happen to send a laptop to. I feel I've been pretty clear on that. But other people noticed, brought it up, and they sure cared to do everything but denounce any association with him, continue to send him laptops, and explicitly include his politics in their "big tent". I dunno man
