we should probably clarify our stance on NixOS

we've been grieving for a while, and we weren't ready to put words to these feelings for a while, but here they are now

briefly: at a technical level, it's a really solid idea. it's clearly the future of sysop stuff, it lets individuals and small groups scale in ways we never could before. we use it for all our stuff. we even like the language itself, though there are things we'd change.

politically, it is not going to pull out of this tailspin. we were closely involved, we know all the relevant people, we see no evidence of good intent. the governance processes are optimally structured to silence dissent. go elsewhere.

we've been putting our weight behind Auxolotl as a replacement, but that's a long-term bet, it will be quite a while before it's anything anyone can use. if you come to get involved, understand that what you're getting involved in is a research project.
