US politics annoyingly, it is genuinely impressive that NASA pulled off a moon landing

there are a long list of reasons, well known to every proponent of space exploration, that this isn't easy even though it's a thing humans have done before. we won't rehash that here

we've had very complex feelings about all that, over the years.

we never really imagined that a new moon landing would happen at a point in history when we just absolutely do not fucking give a shit.

US politics like - wow. for things to be at this point, that it just doesn't even mean anything... SO MUCH is SO BROKEN.

US politics like

it would be one thing for this to be happening in the service of humanity

but it's the exact opposite of that. Nazis demanded that it happen in order to regain the support of their Nazi base. there's nothing to celebrate.

US politics we're told it was only a fly-by. still impressive, though not as impressive. the news articles we checked before tooting about it said "returning from the moon" so we just assumed that meant actually, like, going to the moon..........

US politics, negative @ireneista
Unless multiple total changes to the plan have been made and I haven't heard about them, the plan to actually land on the moon remains a total fantasy, requiring multiple non existent and untested technologies to be invented like mid flight refueling with liquid oxygen and liquid methane with an unknown amount of support rockets being launched to do that (12 at the low end, 20+ at the more realistic end it seems). The reason is because we decided that spacex should build a rocket too heavy to actually be able to carry its own fuel, and with less carrying capacity for non fuel stuff.

And yeah the way people talking about the fly by did make me check that I'd missed something. Honestly, I'm surprised even this mission launched.
